Improve pieces: 1. Control more squares. 2. Move knights to outposts. 3. Rooks to open/semi open files. 4. Centralize queens. 5. You can also improve a piece by targeting a weakness in your opponent's position or defending a weakness in yours. 6. You want your pieces to be doing the most they can do. A queen can put pressure on the kingside, control a great deal of space, and defend a rook at the same time. This is multi-tasking and is another way to improve your pieces.
